COVID-19 Business License Compliance Guidance
Just a month ago, it was business as usual: restaurants took reservations, students filled university classrooms, and the nation's largest brick and mortar retailers1 were open for business. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered concern among every industry, and business leaders are striving for a sense of normalcy in an uncertain economy.
Maintaining licensure during a global pandemic can be challenging, and although license compliance may not be a company's first concern, it is crucial to be aware of the current regulatory environment and the adjustments occurring.
Many state boards have implemented policy changes that could affect your business's renewal due date or fee amount, among other aspects involved with maintaining a license. The South Carolina Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation (LLR) is a prime example, extending license renewal deadlines to September 30th for all licenses, registrations and permits previously scheduled to renew from April to August. These extensions will impact a wide variety of industries and include 15 different license types2. Throughout the country an increasing number of regulatory boards have implemented similar changes. LicenseLogix continues to monitor such changes to regulatory policies in all 50 states3.
It is important to note that policy changes are not limited to each state, as many cities have followed suit. With municipalities closed to the public, many jurisdictions have sought alternative methods of processing license applications. The city of Chicago, for example, will continue processing business licenses, where applicable, online or over the phone. The District of Columbia is processing business licenses entirely online, and the City of Atlanta is accepting business license applications solely by email.
LicenseLogix is committed to alleviating the uncertainty companies are facing with business license compliance during this pandemic.
